To run or not to run…..

With Janathon fast approaching the decision is actually not whether to run or not, I will be taking part, but more like how far. Last January I entered Janathon and ran every day, completing a total of 133 miles in the month. Then Juneathon came along and I began with the idea that I would be able to beat January’s total, this didn’t happen, for various different reasons I took a more relaxed approach as the month continued (finishing with 114 miles under the belt).

So what to do this time round? As I sit writing this blog I have just about seen off a bit of a cold that has lasted over Christmas, stopped me running, and more importantly, seriously affected #decembeer. So I’m eager to get back to the running and blow away the cobwebs.

In my head at the moment I want to beat the 133 miles clocked up last Janathon, but am also well aware of the busy start to the school term that awaits (exam prep, marking and extra sessions). So the plan is to begin with the 4.5ish miles a day that are required and see how we go.

Also, with a new year brings new plans. I was browsing through Runner’s World magazine in search of some races for the year, still considering whether or not to run my second marathon this year, I came across this, Rat Race Dirty Weekend…..

After last year’s attempt at the Zombie Evacuation Race as part of ‘Dead Men Running’ this seemed perfect for 2013. I just hope the rest of the guys agree!

What a day! And to celebrate….

This day will go down in the memories of students and teachers alike. It was a day that very rarely ever happens, a day that students (and teachers!) often dream of, a day when some sort of drama shuts the school unexpectedly. Today was that day.

The day started off reasonably normal, that is if the final few days of the term can ever be called 'normal', that was until 9.30am. The fire alarm sounds, I did think to myself that it was a strange time for a fire drill, cold and windy outside with the threat of rain. Anyway, we all head off to the fire assembly point to go through the rigmarole of the dreaded fire drill. As is normal with a fire drill, you can divide the students into two distinct categories: the kids who find the whole thing a bit of a drag; and the kids who find the whole thing quite exciting.

After being outside for rather longer than normal, together with the slightly worried looks on the faces of the senior leadership team, it was clear that this was no normal fire drill. After various huddles, the announcement was given that the whole school will file into the sports hall and sit down.

Fifteen minutes later, and the whole school were sitting in the sports hall, minus the dozen or so who had either caught hyperthermia, had a panic attack or turned into gibbering wrecks. Then the Head addressed the school: there had been an electrical fault, the fire service had attended, and the decision had been made to close the school. As you can imagine, this announcement was meet with the sensible, reserved reaction it deserved, mainly cheers, clapping and woops.

And so it came to pass that the school was closed and we all went home.

So to celebrate, a quick visit to Tesco to pick up a trio of beers….

#december #14a….back to a local brewery….Oakham Ales' JHB….

This is a very tasty beer, light and refreshing with a distinct citrus aroma and a dry bitter finish. Not the deep full-bodied flavour of some beers, but all the same very easy to drink. I've found in the past that these light citrusy beers normally have a dodgy aftertaste, but not this one.

And so #decembeer #14b….Ridley's (a first for #decembeer)…..and the fantastically named….Old Bob…

Old Bob I would describe as pretty much a run of the mill beer. It is described as, “thick with biscuity malt, spice and rich red fruits”, or in other words, 'beery'. This is one of those beers that is rather forgetful.

Tonight, the beer train is rolling on, and so #decembeer #14c, an entry from St Austell Brewery…..Tribute….

Although, calling it Tribute is a bit deceiving. This is not a particularly good beer, not really sure why I don't like it, and perhaps drinking a beer every day is not the way to go, they all seem to blend into each other. Tribute is described on the bottle as: “moreishly', that is a lie; “delicious”, that is a lie; and “drinkable”; this is also a lie.

I think, if my maths is correct, that makes it 16 beers so far this #decembeer.

Frank Turner…..again!

My love affair with the fantastic Frank Turner continues……and so a blog post was inevitable….

Last Sunday it was the turn of The Engine Shed in Lincoln to host another great Turner gig. It was another sold out gig which is now the norm for Frank Turner.

Support took the form of Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun, and Tim Barry. Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun are a band from Cheltenham, tipped to be big in the near future. Tim Barry an American singer/songwriter playing a rather depressing set that kicked off with a song about a fella who ended up serving time for shooting his sister's husband.

Frank Turner yet again showed why he is becoming so popular, an audience featuring young and old danced and sang the night away in an attempt to knock Wolverhampton off the dance-off top step. Frank played tunes from all four studio albums and a couple from the new album due in 2013. It was also great to see a favourite track of mine, 'Romantic Fatigue', seen played live.

The evening ended with the usual rendition of 'Photosynthesis', complete with a packed Engine Shed sitting down before jumping up and singing and dancing, in what has become a trademark finish to the night.

Overall another brilliant night, and thanks to Twitter I even shifted a spare ticket I had, at face value of course!

Next gig: Frank Hamilton at The Barfly in Camden on the 20th December.

Saying goodbye to the mo….

Thirty very long days and nights have finally come to an end and it is time to bid this ridiculous moustache a fond farewell……

I have only ever grown a moustache twice, both times supporting the fantastic movember initiative. But the time has come to rid the face of this rather creepy looking, hairy appendage. Despite the fact that it is itchy, annoying and troublesome I have formed a bond and become rather attached to my facial friend. But it is time to let go….

  • Calming music on
  • Trim back the long hairs
  • Lather up generously
  • Starting from the outside and working in
  • Washed down with warm water

Remember he will be back next year…

King’s Lynn #parkrun

An early start this morning to attend, for the first time, King's Lynn parkrun. It was a very cold and misty morning at The Walks in King's Lynn.

Today's route was changed slightly from the normal one due to a bit of flooding across the main path, although it was still around the 5km, apparently about 60 yards shorter than the normal route. The course is roughly made up of three mile laps, all run on Tarmac, so a reasonably fast course, despite the couple of 180 deg turns. As is normal for parkruns, it was well organised, with plenty of friendly marshals and regulars.

I would love to have a closer parkrun that I could attend regularly, they are a great idea, not only do you get a good free timed 5km race, but the chance to chat to fellow runners over a coffee at the end. And as well as emailing you with your finishing details, they text you your position and time within 30 mins of finishing….

Dragon Running

Today….#18 in the origami challenge….and one of my favourites of the month so far. A rather 'difficult' but impressive looking dragon…

This came after another very muddy run round the woods on a lovely bright, if somewhat, cold and frosty morning.

And it was very muddy….

Also, a visit to Lincoln this afternoon means I have some new socks, as I think these ones have just about had it….
