Gypsy Tart

Another monthly project, Bakeathon, is complete! Throughout the month of July I have managed to somehow make ten various different things. Today was the turn of an old Kent favourite: Gypsy Tart.

Very easy to make, especially if you buy a pre-cooked pastry base, and just as tasty….

Although it is important to say this was my second effort. First effort didn’t set due to lack of whisking.

So, ten different dishes created:

  • Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Carrot Cupcakes
  • Flap Jacks
  • Chocolate Brownies
  • Gypsy Tart
  • Jam Turnovers
  • Shortbread
  • Chocoalte Croissants
  • Bakewell Tarts
  • Scones

And to celebrate further, how about a video montage….

Shortbread

The 8th attempt at a bit of baking for July's Project brings us to the very simple, the very scrumy, the very tasty: Shortbread. But not just any old Shortbread, may I present, at risk of infringing copyright….Olympic Shortbread….

I am well aware of how simple Shortbread is to make (caster sugar, plain flour and butter) but it still has to be made, and made it has been. These are just a couple of the various comments that have been heard whilst people munch on them:

“Yuuuummmmmyyyyy”

“They're better than Sainsbury's Taste The Difference range”

Another complete success….

Only two more items to complete the project….next up Chocolate Croissants…..

Scones

July’s Project goes from strength to strength. Today: Scones.

It would seem that I have become a magical being, Harry Potter stand aside, David Copperfield make some room, I can now turn this…

Into this…

These Scones with added cranberries went down a storm. Even my nephew said, “They’re well nice!”. This is the same nephew who was called, “Well hot!”, when he attended a middle school in Whitby during his work experience…

Today was spent, in the sun, eating said scones and guzzling glasses of wine…

Lovely jubbly!

Jam Turnovers

July's Project trundles on….today we have Jam Turnovers.

With the aid of a pack of ready made puff pastry what could go wrong?

The answer is nothing.

After a little bit of rolling, a little dollop of jam, a little bit of folding and a little bit of an egg glaze we have half a dozen Jam Turnovers, and even a couple of Apple Turnovers that were specially requested….

Lovely Jubbly!!

Bakewell Tart

July's Project rolls on…

The initial plan was Individual iced Bakewell Tarts, although this soon changed to a 'Traditional' Bakewell Tart due to time restraints.

Today we give thanks to Simon Rimmer of 'Something for the Weekend' fame, today's celebrity chef, for his Bakewell Tart recipe. Although, in a Jamie Oliver 30min meal style, I did do a spot of cutting corners. Namely I got some ready made pastry, I am a man after all!

After a few dodgy moments, the Bakewell Tart emerged from the oven a complete success….

Including some very slapdash rustic looking individual tarts….

The Bakewell Tart is being donated to the school's Strawberry Tea afternoon in aid of Cancer Research.

Chocolate Brownies

Today sees the beginning of July's Project. The challenge will be to bake at least 10 different things, beginning with Chocolate Brownies. Now to be sure everything I make comes out absolutely fantastic I will be using famous celebrity chef recipes only. That way I have someone to blame!

So today, with the help of Jamie Oliver, we have Chocolate Brownies.

This blog will not be giving you a list of ingredients or a method, you can get them online elsewhere, it will just show my attempts to produce some lovely munchies.

So we began with this…

After 15 min preparation plus 25 min in the oven the lovely aroma of Chocolate filled the house. And as Jamie Oliver would say….bloomin' brilliant brownies….

They taste absolutely bloody beautiful and will be eaten for pudding tonight, with a small selection taken to work tomorrow for breaktime. If you want the full recipe click here.

I have therefore decided the first leg of Bakeathon a complete success!
