Today's Juneathon exercise on day 20: a plank.

Now, I can hear you all now….your shouts probably include one or more of the following:

  • “That's not proper exercise!”
  • “A plank!? Pathetic!”
  • “That is a cop out!”
  • “You lazy git!”

Now, a couple of weeks ago you may have heard me shouting something very similar. But my experiences over the last two weeks have changed. I'm now chasing it. I'm desperate to try to beat my best time every time I have a go.

To all those plank haters out there, or the people that don't believe it is worthy of a legitimate Juneathon exercise, I'm telling you it is! If you had seen me today you would realise this fact.

It had been a long day with this that and everything else, which meant an attempt to break my previous best plank of 2min 35sec. I had filled up on pizza (probably over filled myself if I'm totally honest) and was ready to go. The first minute was ok, feeling pretty good. The next 30 sec and the odd shake can be felt, the stomach muscles start working, time slows down and breathing becomes hard. As we approach 2min the shakes are taking over. 2 min 30 secs and you can feel the blood vessels popping in your brain, breathing has become grunts and growns. Time has virtually stopped. The final 15 secs is spent holding your breath and trying not to blackout, everything hurts: stomach, back, shoulders and elbows. Hold it for 2 more seconds….every little helps.

About six weeks ago you may remember (if you are sad enough to be a regular reader) a new toaster was purchased. A 4-slicer toaster. This morning the advantages of a 4-slice toaster were evident for all to see. Genius, pure genius. Two bagels on the go, one slightly delayed to allow for spreading of Philadelphia. Juneathon Day 17

A gentle 30 min jog round the woods on a very muggy evening. But importantly, I seemed to have survived it without any aches and twinges. I think I might try a 'proper' run at the weekend.

Project365 continues trundling along; today we reach day 168. After a couple of days planning for the new academic year, sorting groups, and generally dishing out various jobs…we're happy…

It was a long busy day at school, I stayed late doing a bit of planning and the last thing I felt like doing when I got home was a run. It wasn't until I left the building that I realised it was a lovely evening and also how few cars were left in the car park when I left. Cue photo of the day…

On the drive home I had pretty much decided that today's Juneathon effort would be going for a burton. Then I began to feel guilty, Juneathon has the knack of doing that to you. I didn't want to entirely miss out on a Juneathon activity. I did contemplate a trip to the gym but really couldn't be bothered to leave the house. The answer: mowing the grass.

I took it very seriously: route tracked. Juneathon Day 15. Done.

Today's mileage: 0.46

Juneathon Day 14

Sunday morning, as some would say, the home of the long run. Although, in my case, less the 'home' of the long run and more the homeless hostel. To clarify….I did not go for a long run.

Very gentle 25min jog. I'm definitely getting the feeling that the calf is getting slightly better, it no longer hurts when running, although I can feel it. Yes, I know, I suppose I should really go and see someone about it. The plan is to carry on doing exercise that doesn't aggravate for the next week, then have a go doing a 'proper' run next weekend. If I've still got an issue with it after that, I'll go see someone. Deal.

Juneathon Day 11

This is probably my third Juneathon, and I'd be the first to admit the blog posts have been getting progressively worse. The first ten days of this year's Juneathon have been, all in all, pretty dire. I've not been able to go on my usual runs that would possibly have given me more to talk about. As if to prove the point, today I ventured to the gym, once again, to do exactly the same as what I usually do at the gym recently:

  • 15 min cross-training
  • 2000m row
  • 15 min cross-training

The never-ending calf muscle shenanigans that I'm sure you are all sick of hearing about, are continuing unabated. So the above session means I get to work hard without any dramas.

Project365 #162

Every now and then I am required to bake. Today is one of those days. Tomorrow is the weekly 'cakey bakey' at school – it works out that every 8 weeks or so you are required to bake something for everyone to pig out on. Over the course of the year we have pretty much eaten every kind of cake available to man. So just for a change tomorrow I will be offering up a savoury alternative: crackers. Actually biscuits may be a better description. Apparently they are 'easy' to make. They're not.

As much as I'm getting pretty frustrated not being able to run like I would have before the issue I have with my calf, I'm rather quite enjoying going for short gentle runs. Especially considering the lovely sunny evening we had today. 30min jog at the woods. Lovely jubbly.
